Safia Bint Huyay

Critics of Islam claim that Prophet Muhammad married Safiya Bint Huyay against her will after killing her family. According to historian Tabari, Prophet Muhammad proposed Islam to her, she accepted and she was freed.  She had been married twice before and her previous husband abused her. Another ancient historian, Ibn Ishaq reports the following in his “Sira:” Safiya had seen in a dream when she was the wife of Kinana b. al-Rabi’ b. Abul-Huqayq that the moon would fall into her lap. When she told her husband he said, ‘This simply means that you covet the king of Hejaz, Muhammad.’ He gave her such a blow in the face that he blacked her eye. When she was brought to the apostle the mark was still there, and when he asked the cause of it she told him the story.” Another report says that Prophet Muhammad asked her to choose between going back to her relatives or to be set free and marry him. She preferred to marry him. Whether you believe in these historical accounts or not, it is obvious that Safiya was a legally married wife of Prophet Muhammad and the marriage was a happy one. Prophet Muhammad also had great respect for her. There is a story that one day the Prophet entered her room and saw her crying, when he asked her the reason she answered: ” I have been told that Aisha and Hafsa are speaking badly of me. They say that they are better than Safiyya because they are cousins and wives of Allah’s Messenger”. The Prophet then said: ” how about saying to them”: ” How come when my father is Aaron , my uncle is Moses and my husband is Muhammad?”
