Quran 28:56 [God’s Guidance]

It is true thou wilt not be able to guide every one, whom thou lovest; but God guides those whom He will and He knows best those who receive guidance [Quran 28:56]

EXPLANATION

As far as guidance is concerned, Quran does say:

[7.181] And of those whom We have created are a people who guide with the truth and thereby they do justice.”

[7.159] And of Musa’s people was a party who guided (people) with the truth, and thereby did they do justice.”

So, obviously, God has created people who can guide others. God’s message is there for all, but there are people who deserve God’s special guidance and consideration because they have made themselves good and have allowed themselves to be rightly guided. Because they are pleased with God, God is pleased to please them with additional knowledge. If there is a student in your class who is eager to learn more and has the right abilities, than you would provide more guidance to him, would you not? The same principle works with God. At the same time, Quran acknowledges that there are some people who are so obstinate and rigid in their thinking that they cannot be guided by anybody. And if you do a word search on the Quran for “guide”, you would find out that most of the time, the verses describe those that God would NOT guide. For example:

Allah does not guide aright the unjust people (2.258), (3:86), (5.51), (6.144), (9.19), (9.24), (9.109), (28.50), (46.10), (61.7), (62.5),

Allah does not guide the unbelieving people (2:264), (5.67), (9.37), (16.107),

Allah does not guide the transgressing people (5:108), (9.80), (61.5), (63.6),

Allah does not guide him who leads astray, (16:37)

Allah does not guide him aright who is a liar, ungrateful. (39.3)

Allah does not guide him who is extravagant, a liar: (40.28)

As you can see, there are only a few types of people that God does not guide. And if the number of verses are any guide, the one group that least deserves God guidance are those who are “unjust.” Compare this with the two verses that I have quoted above regarding those who can guide. And these people are described as people who do “justice.” Do you see the link?

Among people who deserve God’s special guidance are those that God chooses for a variety of reasons and the following:

1. Guide to those who guard (against evil). (2,2)

  1. [4.175] Then as for those who believe in Allah and hold fast by Him, He will cause them to enter into His mercy and grace and guide them to Himself on a right path.( 4.175); also (64:11)
  2. [5.16] With it Allah guides him who will follow His pleasure into the ways of safety
  3. …guides to Himself those who turn (to Him).(13.27); (42, 13).
  4. Allah is the Guide of those who believe into a right path.

So, essentially, anybody who believes in God, hold fast by Him, follows Him and believe in a right path can receive God’s guidance.

Strikingly, the very people who are most in need of guidance, “unjust people,” receive no guidance or help from Allah.
“Allah, why will you not guide unjust people, so that they can learn from your infinite wisdom?” NO ANSWER.
